AEO versus SEO explained: how answer engine optimization differs from search engine optimization, and how to do both without doubling the work.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is about giving direct, well-structured answers that search features and AI assistants can lift and show. SEO is the wider discipline of earning visibility in search. AEO sits inside it.
The difference in one table, in words
- Goal: SEO earns clicks from rankings. AEO earns a place in the answer itself.
- Format: SEO pages can be long and varied. AEO leads with a short, clear answer.
- Measure: SEO tracks rankings and traffic. AEO also tracks featured snippets, AI mentions and citations.
- SEO: Earn visibility and clicks in search results.
- AEO: Give direct answers that can be lifted into snippets and summaries.
- GEO: Be understood, trusted and cited by generative AI tools.
How to do both
- Find the questions your customers ask.
- Answer each in two or three sentences at the top of the page.
- Follow with detail, examples and next steps.
- Use clear headings and FAQ sections.
- Add structured data where it applies.
- Keep pages accurate and updated.
Do not neglect the basics
Technical health, authority and genuinely helpful content still decide who gets quoted. AEO without those is polish on a weak foundation.
We cover AEO as part of our generative engine optimization service.
